Jobless and Hopeful
Grinding down the opposition through attrition.

I have taken to applying to as many oppurtunities as possible. Especially the ones which do not ask for a high-grade degree. Or a specific degree. Unless it is Politics. There isn’t much call for that in the general graduate job marketplace these days.

This is my long-term plan. To be applying to as many jobs as possible. But applying to them with thought i.e. changing my CV and my Covering letter for each job in order to make my self sound as attractive as possible. It is not working particularly well at the moment. I know this is due to a deluge of problems. Low grades, no experience, wrong degree and not knowing the industry enough. But I will remain hopeful that the responses will pick up and I will start to see a few more interviews or more positive responses rolling in.

I have had some pretty quick turn-arounds in terms of rejections. Todays was probably the fastest. I think it was Enterprise rent-a-car (I will go for anything). The rejection was probably in my inbox within half an hour of me sending off the application. I have since found out that they work you really hard, like 70-80 hour weeks with little extra pay, so I was just as well out of it.

Entrenchment

I have taken I while to get on my feet with the whole idea of applying for jobs. It has taken me a couple of weeks to sort out my CV, so that it is both compelling and explains everything I want it to. Have kept it to two pages; with opening statement, skills, experience, education and interests. I think it looks good even if the content isn’t so great.

I have also been looking at the ways and places I should be applying for jobs. As there are many websites with graduate oppurtunities, but not that many which will allow you to contact the employer and discuss the setbacks found in your CV.

In other news: There are not that many oppurtunities in my local town. Or atleast not that many that I would be willing to plan to stay here in the long term.

Introduction

I am a 23-year old male who has just finished an undergraduate degree in Politics. I am anticipating that I will get a mediocre mark. I have decided to write a blog which will plot my journey towards finding a job. I am very unprepared for everything to do with finding a job. I have not been employed in over a year, and then my employment will not help with building an impressive CV.

Stay tuned to find out how I get on.
